Reflections of an Entrepreneurial WomanJudith E. Dacey, CPA, Entrepreneurial Consultant
I was lucky. Of course, I didn't know that then. During my growing up years in the '50s, my Mom was unique in our neighborhood. She worked. Not because she had to, like my friend's mother who was divorced, but because she wanted to. Mom ran the credit bureau. My Dad worshipped her. When I was a kid, I thought it was because she worked so hard and cared so much about the business. (Message imprinted: If you run your own business, you will be valued and loved.) My Dad was a lab tech at Westinghouse so he was home by 3:30 every day. He took care of the home, hearth and kids--including dinner. My Pop could do anything. (Message: If you run your own business, you will be treated like a queen and honored by your adoring family awaiting you at the dinner table each night for the news of the day.) Being financial minded, Mom kept the family on a strict budget. We always met her quotas because unbeknownst to Mom, Dad liberally funded everything from the groceries to vacations with the money he made on the side. Seems he forgot to tell Mom about most of the side work he did. (Message: Don't cut expenses. Just make more money. It's easy as an entrepreneur.) So I'm a guilt free entrepreneur. It never occurred to me not to have a business. I never expected to be the only one who cooked dinner nor guilty if I didn't. Today, I realize I definitely had an advantage most women haven't. So many wives, mothers, husbands and fathers feel incredibly guilty about working or having their own business. Do you? How much does your Super Mom or Super Dad expectations gnaw on your conscience and decrease your chances of success? Zip? Congratulations, you are truly one of the lucky ones. But if that wasn't your answer, then you can significantly increase your chances for joy in your career by recognizing these feelings. Reach an internal agreement on how to reconcile these issues with your dreams. Life beckons. Go on now. It's okay to ride the rainbow. (Hey, my Mom & Dad both did!) J.D. Sumter & Associates, Inc. |
