"Why Don't You Get A Real Job?"
By: Nick Nicholas, CSP

If you're self-employed, someone has asked you this question,
"Why don't you get a real job?" Just smile and say, "My
job is as real as they get!" Don't let them dampen your passion for
independence and prosperity. Why? Because you're the leading edge of the
redefined 21st century workforce.
Two hundred years ago, workers in the United States were
self-employed. They sold their skills and talents to individuals and companies
in return for coin or barter. Then came the industrial revolution and the
birth of the large corporation. The cradle-to-grave security promised by "Corporate
America" enticed the workforce to trade their independence of self-employment
for what we've come to know as a "real job."
Today, it is no longer economically feasible for "Corporate
America" to keep that promise. A reality that is sending shock waves
through the workforce - a workforce that has become dependent on the security
of big business. But hold on, there is a silver lining.
The rapid advance of technology is forcing companies to
be more responsive to customer demands. To remain competitive, they have to
be lean and flexible so they are solving the problem by restructuring and
downsizing. For some, this has been a disaster. For entrepreneurs like you,
it is great news because of the opportunities created. So what's the opportunity?
Providing the skills and talent needed by these same companies on an outsourced
basis. It's returning to the independence of running a business. The fact
is, we are experiencing the biggest entrepreneurial boom in decades.
Projections are that the 21st century will produce more
millionaires than any previous century. And like the millionaires of previous
times, these new rich will be the farsighted and courageous entrepreneurs.
People just like you.
So the next time someone asks you, "Why don't you get
a real job" just smile and say, "My job is as real as they get."
